My Band, Rhythm In Blue!

Hey y'all! been awhile since my last post, but ever since helping my brother with his website (http://advanced-ia.com) and getting more responsibilities at work, plus my continuing career with my family band, I would forget about my own blog most of the time ='(

Since I do want to share things that are happening in my life (apart from sharing my experiences in web development), i'd like to start with this clip our kuya vins uploaded in youtube. Here we'll see us (Rhythm In Blue) playing the Papaya song IN THE ORIGINAL KEY! =D I hope you all enjoy it: http://youtube.com/watch?v=MA1PNpnXzlU

By the way, in this video kuya vins is the one singing the song, my dad plays the lead guitar and does backup singing, while tito rory plays with his tambourine while also doing backup singing. there's a short portion where the camera shows me playing the drums, then those not seen in the clip are my mom (who plays the keyboard) and my brother (who plays the bass). We were playing at Ms O Ballroom along West Ave, but we also play at Bykes Cafe, Makati, and Black Betty's at Greenhills.

Check out the video! Thanks guys!

Making Money through Blogs: The Learning Process

I'm new at this stuff... well not really, but it's the first time I'm trying it on my own: Trying to place ads in my blog, working on feeds through feedburner, then display feeds through springwidgets... What's interesting is how someone from my field is only beginning to use these things. Sure I've know what they are and I've used the google reader for all my RSS feeds, but to display those feeds or even the ads on a site--well, I suppose that's understandable considering I never had my own website! I've had blogs but I never really tried to experiment on them... until now.

What fascinates me is how easily we can promote websites nowadays and choose from many different options. It's even reached a point wherein it's hard to pick which one to use... I guess any should work.

There was one thing about promoting my blog which I didn't quite get what I wanted. I tried to promote my blog using blogrush but I was denied! I shouldn't be surprised though, this blog is very new and has nothing relevant to offer the readers... yet. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised either if I don't get anything out of the ads I put here as of the moment. For as long as I don't work on my contents I won't find readers who would want to visit my page, and of course that means no one would click on my ads!

What I want to happen though is basically learn how things work even if it seems pointless to work on anything in my blog now. But here are just a few of the important blogs I visit to learn more about making the most out of blogs/websites:

www.jozzua.com,
macalua.com,
www.xenyo.com/seotools, and
iMediaconnection.com

There are others more but for now I visit these sites more often than any other. Hopefully I'll get the hang of SEO and other money-making ventures on the web. I think supporting technologies like RSS/Atom feeds are equally important, so even the other links I mentioned earlier are worth the look.

I hope I can bring more meat to the table once I explore these technologies. For now, if any of you who happen to read my blog and you understand where I'm at in this process of discovery, please feel free to share your insights and comments. I am eager to learn and eager to be taught!

Thanks for your time and I hope you drop by again =)

In response to jozzua's survey...

What laptop do you use? Brand? Model? Specs?

A8SC by Asus.

It's got Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T7100 (1.8GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache), 2G DDR2 667 MHz SDRAM, 14" WXGA(1280x800), NVIDIA Geforce 8400M G, External 128MB GDDR2 VRAM, SATA 120GB (5400rpm), DVD Super Multi, SD/MMC/MS/MS PRO Card Reader, 0.3 Mega-Pixel web-cam, Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection or Intel® Wireless WiFi, Intel® High Definition Audio MDC Fax/Modem, 10/100 Base T, Built-in Bluetooth™V2.0+EDR, Built-in Intel® High Definition Audio compliant audio chip, Built-in speaker and microphone, 6 cell 4800mAh 53Whrs, and Windows XP Pro (SP2) already installed in the laptop. It also came with the emould for the A8 series which covers the top, lcd and the full keyboard and palm rest. Got it all at P69.5K at TipidPC.com, and I'd like to believe that I got a good deal out of it!

When did you buy it?

Oct 21 (before my rebond =P )

What was your main buying criteria for this laptop?

Mobility. Next was enough power to run heavy applications. I'll state my observations later.

What other laptops were you looking at before you decided on this laptop?

MacBook, MacBook Pro, Asus VX2s & F3Sv... they were all expensive though =P

Were your computing needs satisfied after buying your laptop?

Not all, unfortunately. For my imaging apps it runs slower than expected. i thought the extra 2G Ram would help (since I also was not given an option to upgrade the processor and video card), but i still wait a few seconds for these apps to load or open files. On the other hand, I enjoy the convenience of bringing my laptop and chance upon free wifi connections, like right now =) and for most office apps it does it's job well =)

Would you recommend this laptop to others?

yep. it's not a bad laptop at all! i'm just not getting the power i need for imaging software, but otherwise the whole package is great!

What's GOOD about your laptop? What did you really like about it?

Mobility and Internet anywhere! =D

What's BAD about your laptop? What you think could be improved about it.

I just wanted to be able to upgrade to at least 2.0 GHz before i bought this and pack it with an Nvidia 8600M GT, however my supplier said he'll still need to order that from Taiwan and some tax hassles discouraged me. But it's got what i need mostly, so overall I'm happy with it =)

Not a bad start: Asus A8SC (modified)

(This is me and my cat, Domino, facing the screen of the laptop and getting our picture taken!)

I finally bought my first laptop; the A8SC by Asus.

Not a very good start either...

Interestingly enough I had to remove a virus on the very evening I got my lappy. The distributor I bought this from was kind enough to deliver the unit to my home already equipped with utilities to keep my PC running smoothly. Unfortunately it also came with Disk Knight, a supposedly helpful utility designed to protect PCs from infection launched from a USB memory stick, though it also installs itself on memory keys you plug in... Later when you plug that stick to other PCs, it'll automatically install itself there. Hence it is also labeled as an undesirable program, and so far only Kaspersky was able to detect it (AVG was originally installed in my laptop, but it wasn't able to detect the virus so I uninstalled it). I went to the Kaspersky website right away and downloaded the trial software, and fortunately for me it did the job! It detected and successfully removed Worm.Win32.AutoRun.ao by deleting C:\Windows\Knight.exe and a restore file. (I bet Nod32 would've been able to detect that also, but I didn't install that because it looked difficult to use. Kaspersky seemed a good in-between for user-friendly and sophisticated anti-virus software. Anyways...) After that was done, overall I think my 1-week old lappy is my favorite tech toy for the next two years! (More or less, depending on funds...)

Bringing it to the office...

Finally, I live up to my handle (mobile monica) and I get to bring my light-weight lappy to work! Of course when I got there, the first thing my officemates noticed was my hair (got that rebonded as well), and then they noticed the skin (emould) on my keyboard... the specs of my lappy became secondary =P I suppose it's not that common around here to have emoulds covering their laptops, but I think I'm doing a pretty good job at marketing this to my friends with laptops.

The best part for me was being able to bring my lappy to meetings and demonstrate my work without rushing to store my files in a USB Key just so that I could plug it in someone else's laptop! And of course I love being able to customize and install whatever I want and not be restricted by AD policies from our office network!

As for performance...

Only time will tell if my lappy can take the imaging and web development software I use for work, especially if I use them simultaneously with large files at a time. But for certain, some of the activity I do here is faster than using my old PC at home, however, there is very little difference in speed when I open files here compared to my desktop PC at the office. Ultimately, what I really paid for is the mobility and convenience of having a laptop when I need to work in the strangest places (like a ballroom joint where my band plays =P Sometimes I work during breaks in between sets).

All I can say now is THANK YOU, LORD for caring enough to bless me with this laptop! I will take care of it and use it for your glory =) (...and some work and games of course!)
